This is the Painted Turtle

They're always in the ditches here in Louisiana, especially after a good rain.

I am not sure but I thinkthat is not a painted slider.I think you might have what is an Eastern Box Turtle, he has large scales on his fropnt legs and does not have webbed feet, also there is not enough stripped coloring on his front scales, they are more spotted and is marked like a box turtle...Does his head and tail all pull in when you startle him?..If so does his carpase close up or seem to shut up like a clam?..That would tell you he is probably a box variety...Painted turtles will generaly never leave there aquatic habitat to cross a road unless they were washed into a drainege ditch during a flood...his coloring though is very unique, he's got more red that is vivid than usual and his shell is also a very light color to...

Hmmm, a search brought up several that looked like him. That's why I say it's Painted. However, most of those were all dark red under the shell. This one wasn't. I thought maybe it was an age thing, but now I'm not sure. It had rained alot then, & we picked him up out of the road. La is a tropical state, so the ditches always have water in them & lots of turtles. Come to think of it, I think he did pull in a ways, but came right back out. You're a turtle man, huh? I'm a lizard girl. Lol!

Mainly on him it was the coloring on his legs and scales on his front end there. But also His shell is not the right type for a painted turtle, he has more of a ballish or really round and domed sort of like a cauntalope, a painted slider is a lot flatter and more airplane winged like. I dont know how else to describe it, also there shells do not close up at all when they pull in there heads and tails, a box turtles shell will kinda close up a little to protect them more...

But yes I am a turtle man, I love em..I still need to finish up my current tortise cage out in the back yard, I got him a big 20 foot by 6 foot planter I made to keep him penned up..looks really nice. Just gotta get Bermuda Grass growing in the corner of it for him to eat..

Yeah, I still have him...He spends his time indoors all night cuz it gets down to about 50 degrees at night, but I put him back out in the morning...I finally got his area all squared away and he has lots of grass to munch on...

Yes, I'd like to see him! They get pretty huge. Not related, but we've been checking into getting Lucien a pet Tarantula. I have a phobia of spiders because I had 9 black widow bites at the same time. Was paralyzed waist down for a few wks, it was a mess. I don't want him to have the same fear without a reason, you know. Spiders are people too. Lol!
